Rare Oolong Tea

Aged oolong is popular in China and Taiwan, but are actually very hard to find in the U.S., which is part of why we’re so excited to be able to share it with you.

Special House Roast

Roasting is a crucial part of properly handling aged oolong teas, to remove moisture and improve the flavor over time. This Dong Ding has been skillfully re-roasted at a low temperature, gradually, for about four hours, to bring out sweetness and floral notes.

Source & Terroir: Dehua County

This tea is from Dehua County in Fujian Province, China. Dehua is mountainous, and this tea is grown at about 800 meters elevation (about 2,600 feet above sea level), nice and high, perfect for growing tea. The atmosphere is cloudy and misty. It’s not too hot and not too dry, so the tea plants grow slowly, and it helps create a sweet, rich, complex flavor in the finished tea.

Fragrant Tea Cultivar

Intense fragrance is one of the best points of this tea. It’s roasty-toasty, but the most noticeable scent is floral.

This Dong Ding Oolong is made from a premium, rare tea plant cultivar, called Huang Jin Gui, which is famous but also difficult to find. It’s one of the top four oolong tea plant cultivars in Fujian Province. (The most well-known is Tie Guan Yin.)

Huang Jin Gui means golden cassia cinnamon or golden osmanthus, and the cultivar is named after the yellow color of the baby leaf buds, as well as the floral fragrance which the plant creates.
